For large Hitachi excavators, the class numbers used in the market (385, 450, 470, 500) map to only a few tooth sizes. The 385 and 450 share one tooth; the 470, the 385N and the 500 each take their own, larger tooth. TTRMCO supplies the 385/450 and 470 teeth in both DM and ZF brands, and the 385N and 500 teeth in DM.

Why 385 and 450 match but 470 does not

In the DM factory list the tooth row is literally titled "Hitachi 385 or 450", meaning both classes use the same adapter and tooth. The 470 row is a separate item priced at almost twice as much, because it is a bigger and heavier tooth. The classic mistake is a 470 owner buying a 450 tooth because the numbers are close; it will not seat on a 470 adapter. For scale, the DM special list gives the special-grade 385 tooth a weight of about 8.65 kg.

Also note that "470 tooth" in the Iranian market can mean a Komatsu WA470 loader tooth, a completely different part. If you run a loader, read our Komatsu WA420 and WA470 loader teeth guide instead.

DM or ZF?

DM Hitachi teeth use one alloy, with a hardness range of 45 to 55 HRC stated on the product page; they are the economical choice for bulk digging and loading. The ZF 385/450 and 470 teeth come in Normal and Special grades; Special lasts longer in silica sand, gravel and crushed rock. There is no Mining grade for these two ZF teeth.

A practical rule: if your teeth blunt too quickly, try a higher grade. If they snap, the cause is usually a worn adapter or pin, not the alloy.

Getting more hours from Hitachi teeth

  • Rotate corner and centre teeth where the system allows, because corners wear first.
  • Change the tooth before the tip wears back to the adapter nose; a worn adapter costs far more than a tooth.
  • Check pins every shift; see why teeth fall off.
  • Avoid side-loading the bucket against a rock face; twisting is the main cause of teeth breaking at the waist.

FAQ

Is the Hitachi 450 tooth the same as the 385?

Yes. Both the DM and ZF ranges list one tooth for the 385 and 450 classes.

Will a 470 tooth fit a 450?

No. The 470 tooth is larger; fit the 385/450 tooth on a 450.

Which ZF grades exist for Hitachi teeth?

The 385/450 and 470 ZF teeth come in Normal and Special. The generic ZF Hitachi tooth is Normal only.

Where can I buy a Hitachi 500 tooth?

TTRMCO supplies it in DM: Hitachi 500 tooth (DM).
