Bucket Tooth Pins and Retainers: Why Teeth Fall Off and How to Stop It

Short answer: a bucket tooth usually falls off because the retainer has lost its grip, the adapter nose is worn so the tooth rocks, or the tooth is overloaded by prying and side impacts. The fix is almost always cheap: new pins and retainers with every tooth set, and a new adapter when the nose is rounded. TTRMCO supplies pins for the common Komatsu, Hyundai, Doosan, Liugong and Caterpillar systems.

How a pin-and-retainer system holds the tooth

In a conventional system the tooth slides over the adapter nose and a pin passes through both. A rubber or spring retainer keeps the pin in place. The adapter carries the digging load; the pin is only meant to keep the tooth from sliding off. ESCO, a major ground-engaging-tool maker, describes its own systems on the same principle, and its patent filings note that friction-based retention lets a pin work loose under the constant changes in resistance from rock and roots.

Five causes of lost teeth

CauseWhat you seeFix
Hardened or crushed retainerPin slides out by handNew pin and retainer every tooth change
Rounded adapter noseNew tooth rocks on the noseReplace the adapter

Why a lost tooth is expensive

The adapter nose is not built to dig. Once a tooth is gone, the nose wears quickly and the next tooth will not fit tightly. In a quarry the lost tooth can also end up in the crusher. Compared with that, a pin is the cheapest part on the bucket.

Good practice at every tooth change

  1. Park the bucket flat on the ground, stop the engine and keep hands clear of the drift line.
  2. Clean packed soil out of the pocket before fitting the new tooth.
  3. Try the new tooth on the nose by hand. If it rocks noticeably, order an adapter.
  4. Always use a new pin and retainer; drive the pin fully home so the retainer seats in its groove.
  5. Wear eye protection. Pins are driven with a hammer and drift and chips can fly.

FAQ

Can I reuse the old pin?

It is false economy. Old retainers lose elasticity and old pins are often worn or bent. Fit new ones with every tooth set.

My teeth are new but keep falling off. Why?

Almost always a worn adapter nose or a tooth that does not match the adapter system. Test-fit by hand and check the pin hole.

Are hammerless systems better?

Hammerless systems, such as ESCO Ultralok, put the lock inside the tooth and remove the separate pin. They are easier to change, but cost more and need matching adapters.

Does TTRMCO sell pins separately?

Yes, pins and washers are sold separately. Call +98 21 91001357 to confirm the right pin for your machine.
