Greasing an excavator or wheel loader means pumping fresh grease into every pin-and-bushing joint until old, dirty grease is pushed out. The bucket pins collect the most mud and shock, so in heavy or wet work they are usually greased every shift. The operation manual has the exact chart. As one published example, Bobcat's service schedule for the E62 compact excavator lists the bucket pivots at 50 hours in normal use and every 10 hours when working in water. Experienced operators in dusty or wet jobs often grease bucket pins twice a day.
How to grease a pin properly
- Put the bucket on the ground to take the load off the joint so grease spreads over the whole surface.
- Wipe the fitting first, or you will push dirt in with the grease.
- Pump until clean grease appears at both ends of the joint. Dark old grease coming out means contamination is being flushed.
- Replace any fitting that will not take grease the same day; a dry joint wears in days.
- Wipe off the excess so it does not hold dust.
Which grease?
Most manuals call for a lithium-complex extreme-pressure grease of NLGI grade 2 for pins and bushings, and some ask for molybdenum (moly) grease in heavy service. Grease stiffens in winter; follow the temperature chart in the manual rather than switching types on a guess, and never mix incompatible greases.
Loose pins destroy bucket teeth
A worn, dry bucket joint lets the bucket hit the ground at an angle, so the impact lands on one or two teeth. The result is broken teeth or uneven wear across the set. Does poor greasing affect bucket teeth?
Yes. A sloppy bucket joint concentrates impact on a few teeth and shortens tooth and adapter life.
