Excavator and wheel loader tip-overs on slopes usually come from three things: travelling across the grade, swinging a loaded bucket downhill, and ground that gives way under the tracks. This checklist from TTRMCO collects twelve rules that keep machines upright on road-building and quarry sites.
An excavator's centre of gravity moves every time the boom and bucket move. On level ground the counterweight balances that shift; on a grade the same movement can push the machine past its tipping point. MSHA reviewed 34 excavator accidents at US surface mines between 2002 and 2009, and one fatal case involved an embankment failing under the machine.
| Situation | Right move |
|---|---|
| Must dig on a grade | Bench first, work facing up or down, dump uphill |
| Machine starts to slide | Lower the bucket gently to the ground; do not swing |
| Wet or freshly placed ground | Stop, compact or reroute |
Worn teeth need more force to penetrate, so the operator pushes harder with the boom, which adds instability on a slope. Sharp teeth such as PC220 tooth DM or PC220 tooth ZF make digging smoother. See also our daily walk-around checklist.
There is no single number; it depends on machine weight, boom reach, load and ground. Use the manual limit and keep extra margin on soft soil.
Tracked excavators are usually more stable on grades and soft ground; wheeled machines should work on outriggers.
Do not jump. Stay belted inside the cab, lower the bucket and avoid swinging.
Avoid it. Level the loading area so both loader and truck stand stable.
