Excavator Daily Walk-Around Inspection: A 5-Minute Pre-Start Checklist

Every day before starting an excavator, with the engine cold and the machine on level ground, spend five minutes walking around it: undercarriage, fluid levels and leaks, hoses and cylinders, boom and arm pins, bucket teeth and corners, then the cab and alarms. This catches most costly failures and accidents before they happen. TTRMCO wrote this checklist for operators and site supervisors.
Why with the engine cold?
Cold, the fluids have drained back and the sight gauges read true, and fresh leaks are easier to see on a dry body. In the United States, OSHA rules (29 CFR 1926.20 and 1926.600) require construction equipment to be inspected by a competent person; anywhere, a written checklist protects both the owner and the operator.
The checklist

The bucket: where the check saves the most money
A tooth lost and not noticed means the bare adapter digs, and its nose wears away. A worn adapter will not hold a new tooth, and the cost goes from one tooth to welding a new adapter. Count the teeth every morning and try each pin by hand. For a PC200 that means PC200 tooth pin and PC200 teeth (DM) or ZF; for a PC300, PC300 teeth and PC300 corners.
After starting
- All warning lights should go out after a few seconds.
- Take unusual noise, heavy smoke or vibration seriously.
- Test every function slowly: boom, arm, bucket, swing, travel.
- Log the result with hours, date and operator name, and photograph defects.
FAQ
How long does it take?
Five to ten minutes with practice, nothing compared to a day of downtime.
Can a small hydraulic leak wait?
No. The oil is under high pressure and a weeping hose can burst. Park the machine until it is fixed.
Can I finish the shift with a cracked tooth?
Better not; it may break and damage the adapter. TTRMCO supplies DM and ZF teeth with a breakage warranty.
Is the wheel loader checklist the same?
Mostly; instead of tracks, check tyre pressure and condition and the brakes.
